The University of South Australia has a long tradition of providing high quality education, is the largest university in South Australia and the fifth largest in Australia. Recent achievements include being named among the top performers for offshore students, 2001 and 2002; the Prime Minister's Award for University Teacher of the Year 2002; and Australian Export Awards in 1999, 2000 & 2001. It is also South Australia's leading industry-linked research university.

The University of South Australia is a global university which has established links with other universities on all continents. The University of South Australia is a major provider of on-line programmes, distance education and off-shore teaching programmes. Research at the university brings together multidisciplinary teams to work on both fundamental and applied research projects. The University is known as a leader in the application of knowledge through a vast array of mutually beneficial partnerships with industry, business and professions. The University is spread over six campuses in Adelaide, its suburban environs, and the northern regional city of Whyalla. It was established in January 1991 by new statute and charter, but its origin date back into the last century with its antecedent institutions of the South Australian School of Mines and Industries formed in 1889 and Adelaide School of Arts in 1856, the Adelaide Teachers' College in 1876 and the Adelaide Kindergarten Training College in 1907.

The University offers qualifications from undergraduate to PhD levels in some 40 professional disciplines and has established a strong teaching and research reputation in applied science, art and design, engineering, health sciences, management and commerce, teacher education, and social sciences.

With so wide a spectrum of academic disciplines and an excellent national and international reputation for the quality of its teaching and research programmes, the University, of South Australia attracts students from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds from within Australia and overseas.

The de Lissa Institute of Early Childhood and Family Studies is situated within the Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences, within the University of South Australia. The Institute dates back to 1907 when the first kindergarten Training College was opened under the direction of Lillian de Lissa, a pioneer the field of early childhood.

The de Lissa Institute today is a centre of excellence for early childhood and family studies at both the national and international levels. The de Lissa Research Centre is an active research area such as early childhood teacher education, child development, childcare and family studies. It sponsors the work of research fellows and has a fellowship funds that attracts research fellows from Australia and overseas.
